Wappingers Falls explosion causes building collapse, injuries: What we know so far

An explosion in Wappingers Falls, New York, on Thursday afternoon caused a building collapse and injured several people. The explosion occurred at 4 Brick Row, a four-unit apartment building, at around 12:22 p.m.
According to witnesses, the explosion was so powerful that it shook the ground and caused nearby buildings to vibrate.The blast also sent a plume of smoke and debris into the air.
First responders arrived on the scene quickly and began to search for survivors. As of Thursday evening, at least two people have been rescued from the rubble and several others remain unaccounted for.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation. However, authorities believe that it may have been caused by a gas leak.
"We believe that this was a gas explosion," said Wappingers Falls Fire Chief Joseph Cardillo. "We don't have any confirmation on that yet, but that's our initial belief."
The explosion caused significant damage to the apartment building. The front of the building was completely destroyed and the rest of the structure is severely unstable.
"The building is not safe to enter," said Cardillo. "We're going to have to wait until the building is stabilized before we can continue the search for survivors."
The explosion also caused damage to several other buildings in the area. Windows were shattered and siding was torn off.
"It's a miracle that no one was killed in this explosion," said Cardillo. "We're very lucky."
The Red Cross is assisting those who have been displaced by the explosion. A shelter has been set up at the Wappingers Falls Middle School.
